One of the things that we love about the line-up of andBeyond’s Phinda lodges is the sheer diversity on offer – they differ quite considerably in size, in style and décor, not to mention that even the landscapes in which they lie are vastly different, from lodges lying hidden within the sand forest, to others clinging to mountain sides, to another which inhabits a more traditional bush setting overlooking a waterhole! And it is this latter lodge – also the smallest of the Phinda properties – that we feature here, namely Phinda Zuka.The founding of Phinda (meaning “the return” in isiZulu) back in the 1990’s was based on converting degraded pineapple, sisal and cattle farms and rewilding it into a protected wilderness reserve. Zuka was actually the private family bush home for one of the key original investors/founding families of the reserve before being integrated into andBeyond's public lodge offerings in 2004, when it was originally marketed and known as Phinda Getty House, later being rebranded as Phinda Zuka (meaning “the dawn”).Interestingly, the original house was constructed using the golden sandstone blocks from a demolished Eastern Free State sandstone farmhouse which was dismantled and transported hundreds of miles to Phinda! The stones were reassembled alongside timber, thatch, and screeded cement to construct the family retreat. Originally built as a private family home, the layout maintains a residential, bohemian warmth rather than the slicker and more overtly luxurious feel of the other Phinda lodges.As you might imagine given its family home origins, Phinda Zuka is an ideal venue for small groups, friend circles, or multi-generational families who can book the entire 4-suite lodge as a private villa complete with a dedicated ranger, tracker, private chef, and butler team. However, more and more it is also sold on an individual suite basis and operated as a more typical game lodge.The lodge features just 4 thatched Zululand bush suites (including a 2 bedroomed Family Suite sleeping 2 adults and 2 children which also features a shared lounge area), each equipped with an en-suite bathroom, double outdoor/indoor showers, deep circular tubs, and a private outdoor sala or veranda. They’re smaller than the suites typically found at the other Phinda lodges and lack such features as private plunge pools, however they are still very stylish and comfortable, particularly after the extensive renovation Zuka underwent back in 2025. It also means that Zuka offers generally lower rates than the other Phina lodges.The lodge’s main public areas are comfortable and homely, featuring a comfortable indoor lounge, a safari library with Wi-Fi, and an open interactive café-style kitchen where guests can chat directly with the chef. Interior designs throughout the lodge showcase muted earth tones, soft stone, and blue/green palettes accented by African craft textures and woven details, achieving an overall feeling of understated luxury.The main deck lies in prime position with views over the busy lodge waterhole (which recently had reeds etc removed to make spotting the visiting wildlife, including frequent herds of elephants, even easier) We love the new open-air boma, which rather than the usual wooden fences is a stylishly organic looking circular design that resembles the packed earth architecture found in places like Mali. A similarly styled firepit sits just in front of the boma, so guests returning from their evening game drive can enjoy a pre-dinner drink around the fire. Finally (and vitally given the summer heat experienced in this neck of the woods) is the lodge’s swimming pool where guests can enjoy a refreshing dip or enjoy a cold drink on the pool deck whilst drinking in the stunning views over the waterhole!  On the subject of game viewing, Phinda is generally recognised as offering the finest game viewing in KZN. Zuka is located in arguably the finest section of the reserve for this, as the Zuka section in the west of the reserve consists of more open grassy plains attracting large numbers of easy to spot game, compared to the more mountainous areas to the east or the forested areas in the north. Another massive plus point is that the area surrounding Zuka is famous for its dense, habituated leopard population and Zuka played a pivotal role in habituating Phinda’s wild leopards to vehicle presence without altering their natural behavior - starting with a famous matriarch leopard named Nkonyane - making the area around Zuka famous for close-up leopard sightings!
