What's Hot

  • Host James Steyn is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable guides in South Africa – he and his passionate team deliver a superb wildlife experience at Senalala, whether on the twice-daily game drives or even better still, on foot with a walking safari through the big game rich tracts of the Klaserie!
  • Wherever you are in the camp – whether relaxing on your room’s deck, relaxing by the welcoming swimming pool, or enjoying lunch on the veranda – you have great views down to the lodge’s waterhole where a steady stream of animals coming down to drink will keep you captivated
  • Guests consistently rave about the delicious meals that emerge from the Senalala kitchens – good thing there’s a small gym if you don’t fancy going home with too expanded a waistline!
  • Fantastically warm and friendly staff led by Corlia deliver a real home-away-from-home experience that makes for a superbly relaxing and rejuvenating stay
  • The rooms are spacious and comfortable and have been nicely and stylishly modernised without becoming overly luxurious and pretentiously styled as seems to be increasingly the case

What's Not

  • The style here is homely, simple and extremely welcoming – if you’re looking for a highly stylized designer experience and the actual bush experience comes a distant second, then this isn’t the place for you
  • We would prefer if all the 8 rooms were free-standing as opposed to being grouped in 4 semi-detached units
  • Pity that it’s only the end rooms furthest from the lodge that have an outside shower

A SENSE OF AUTHENTICITY

The safari experience has changed massively over the last couple of decades. South African game lodges have become ever more luxurious with top designers brought in to impart cutting edge style and ever increasing levels of opulence. The unintended result (along with ever increasing prices!) has sometimes been that guests can actually feel cut off from the bush around them and a bit removed from the whole bush experience – a case of style over substance in short. Senalala is the very welcome antidote to this trend. Here you get a true authentic bush experience that cuts through all the clutter and leaves you genuinely enriched by the experience.

GREAT HOSTS

It all starts with the very warm and personal hosting at this intimate little lodge of 8 rooms that has guests consistently raving (and with many repeat guests – always the sign of a great lodge!) James and Corlia Steyn are the lovely hosts at Senalala and deliver a winning recipe by engendering a true home-away-from-home atmosphere in the camp, together with delivering the very finest wildlife guiding once out exploring the vastness of the Klaserie reserve. Corlia, who has been with the lodge since 2008, oversees the management of the camp and together with her team ensures a real sense of genuine warmth and caring as they excel in pampering the guests. James, together with helping to host the guests, is one of the most highly qualified field guides in South Africa and possesses a passion and deep knowledge of the bush that he imparts to guests in a way that hugely enriches their bush experience.

GREAT UPDATE OF AN OLD FORMULA

Senalala is located a 45min drive into the Klaserie reserve, well away from other lodges – compared to busier reserves like the Sabi Sands, here you see very few other vehicles whilst out on game drive. The lodge itself is a well-judged renewal of an old private camp that has given a touch of contemporary style to the traditional thatched rondavel structure. The result is a very comfortable lodge where you instantly feel at home and able to relax (some very upmarket lodges on the other hand can make you feel a tad intimidated, almost scared to touch anything in case it breaks!)

INTIMATE AND COMFORTABLE

The lodge’s 8 rooms are located in 4 semi-detached units that all enjoy views out over the lawns towards the very active waterhole that takes pride of place in front of the lodge. The air-conditioned rooms are all very spacious and, whilst simple and unpretentious, they also boast various little styling touches that make them attractive spaces. The screeded cement floors and headboards have a timeless yet contemporary earthy appeal whilst the bathrooms are also very appealing with their standalone baths and huge walk-in showers. The rooms succeed in offering modern comforts without once sacrificing the charm and feel of a genuine bush camp.

GREAT GUIDING

Whether you’re guided by James or one of his passionate team who he is mentoring, the expert guides and trackers at Senalala display an intimate knowledge of the bush and a keen passion for animals. After all, they have the perfect inspiration: James is more widely and recently known for being an anchor presenter on South Africa’s oldest nature program on television, 50/50, and when he’s not running the lodge he also helps to train and assess field guides nationally.

With its wide game traversing area, the lodge’s game drives in the Klaserie gives great opportunities to encounter the Big Five, as well as even more memorable sightings like African Wild Dogs and Honey Badgers. The guides’ expertise is immediately obvious when you’re out in the bush: not only are you put right up close with the well-known larger wildlife like the Big Five, but these knowledgeable guides reveal the more subtle and captivating parts of the bush that are so easily missed or overlooked in the rush to get to the next sighting that occurs at many lodges. It all makes for a fun, enjoyable and educational wildlife experience that puts many better known lodges in the shade.

A TRULY DELICIOUS DINING EXPERIENCE

Back at the lodge, you can relax around the pool whilst watching the steady flow of animals coming through to drink at the waterhole in front of you – herds of elephant and buffalo are regular visitors as well as a host of smaller animals. Summonsed by the beat of the drums, meals are usually enjoyed in communal style at the large table on the open veranda of the lodge. Corlia and her team consistently serve up the most delicious meals and are happy to cater for various specific dietary requirements. Afterwards enjoy a warming drink around the fire pit whilst you exchange stories of the day’s sightings with other guests and staff under the immensity of the African night sky!
