What's Hot

  • There are only eight traditionally private reed thatched roof suites – this ensures that your stay is intimate and exclusive!
  • This lodge is situated in the prestigious Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve - world-renowned for Big Five game viewing and its high density of leopards!
  • Doesn’t carry the hectic price-tags of some of the more “designer” lodges in the Sabi Sands
  • This lodge offers something unique and new - scheduled Photographic Safaris with specially adapted vehicles and professional photographers to give advice and guidance

What's Not

  • Cheetah Plains is a simple lodge – where the chalets are more comfortable than luxurious -but the friendly staff and great game viewing makes up for it!
  • Unfortunately there are no trackers at Cheetah Plains, but you are accompanied by experienced and knowledgeable rangers
  • Standard rooms don’t have baths, just showers
Cheetah Plains

Cheetah Plainsa solid, traditional game lodge where the emphasis is on great game viewing and warm hospitality (and a nice side-effect is that it doesn’t carry the stratospheric pricing that many of the “designer” camps are saddled with)

This lodge is one of the oldest bush camps in the Sabi Sands - where the emphasis is on offering you traditional safari values and comfortable accommodation, with great food served in the boma under the stars around the crackling camp-fire –you can’t help but sit back and relax after a long game-viewing filled day! And game is certainly what you’ll get to see at Cheetah Plains!

It lies in the north of the Sabi Sands reserve with the Kruger National Park as one neighbour and the famous Mala Mala as another – with no fences between the reserves which allows game to move freely, the reserve offers some of the most exceptional wildlife in southern Africa! At Cheetah Plains you’ll be blown away by the abundant wildlife and unparalleled game viewing –of particular interest is the high density of leopards that traverse the area. These beautiful, large and majestic cats are frequently seen as well as other favourites like elephant, rhino, cape buffalo, and lion.

The main lodge has a comfortable lounge area where you’re invited to put your feet and chill with a good book and ice-cold drink whilst surrounded by the sights and sounds of the African bushveld! (and if you can’t beat your addiction you can even browse the internet and get in touch with family and friends to tell them how much you’re enjoying yourself!) On hot summer’s days the swimming pool (surrounded by bushveld trees) is just a footstep or two away - and it'll be tough to resist the invitation to take a dip and cool down. From the main lodge you can also gaze out onto the dam or towards a wetland – where bushbuck and other game often come to drink!

The nine traditionally-thatched chalets at Cheetah Plains melt into beautiful indigenous gardens -which in turn are surrounded by pristine African bushveld. With only nine chalets you’re ensured an exclusive safari experience away from the crowds. There are six standard chalets, with en-suite bathroom (just showers, no bath) and a beautiful double bed, which is romantically draped in mosquito netting, whilst the room is cooled with air-conditioning and an overhead fan.

Then there are two luxury chalets which are larger than the standard rooms and also boast an outdoor shower. Whilst they’re very comfortable and spacious (especially with the lovely high open ceilings) it’s probably true to say that the rooms aren’t going to win any style awards or appear in any upmarket décor magazines any time soon - but that would be to completely miss the point of what Cheetah Plains is all about. This is a solid, traditional game lodge where the emphasis is on great game viewing and warm hospitality (and a nice side-effect is that it doesn’t carry the stratospheric pricing that many of those “designer” camps are saddled with) Finally there is a 2 bedroomed Bush Cottage which has been fenced off and is therefore suitable for families travelling with kids.

You’ll enjoy 2 game drives daily which bring completely different experiences. Setting out into the bushveld in the late afternoon is the ideal time to spot the predators that prowl the Sabi Sand. Leopard and lion often emerge in the early evening to drink water or to set off on their night’s hunt! The early morning game drives bring you the magic of the African sunrise, where many of the bushveld inhabitants will also be waking up for the day to a chorus of bird song, or settling down to laze in the shade after a hard night’s hunting.

Something unusual offered by Cheetah Plains is scheduled photographic safaris. A game drive vehicle has been specifically kitted out with custom-designed photographic seats and control arms – you’re therefore equipped perfectly to capture some unforgettable photographic moments. Professional photographers are on hand to give one-on-one advice and instruction which will benefit both the experienced photographer and the complete novice! The lodge also offers bush walks and birding safaris (with professional and passionate guides) - where you will be thrilled with the sights, smells and touch of all the smaller things that if in a game vehicle you may simply drive by!

Cheetah Plains may not be the most luxurious of all Sabi Sand lodges, but if it’s a comfortable traditional bush break that you’re looking for then it certainly will deliver the goods –this intimate lodge offers outstanding hospitality and welcoming staff, so you’re ensured of an African game experience to be remembered for years to come!
